AI versus MT Nov 28, 2024

I have no strong opinion about this because none of my agency customers seem to use AI engines like Chat GPT at the moment. I suppose self-learning machine translation engines are still the better option, which I think makes sense.

I was once asked to translate an AI prompt and test and fine-tune it. But I declined that offer, because I'm really not interested in that kind of work.

What are "AI localization capabilities"? Nov 28, 2024

And how do they differ from translation capabilities?

A side note... Nov 28, 2024

I wonder what’s next? AI can generate content, but there are also a lot of tools trained to detect AI-generated content and help fixing it (???).

Sorry Nov 28, 2024

I'm sorry, but I'm really sick of all these AI topics. It's the same discussion wherever I go.

I understand your feelings, but what do you expect? AI/MT is affecting the whole translation industry. How could it not be the talk of the town? Talking about it is a way to stay up-to-date. As a translator I would like to know what's going on (or what's not going on). It helps to make informed business decisions.

overrated hype Nov 28, 2024

I am tired of these topics too because I do not see a lot of genuine contribution in the discussions. Usually it is just one side pushing "AI is the future, just accept it" and the other saying "leave me alone, I don't want to know anything about it". I plead guilty on the latter, but it is rather a consequence / reaction to the former. Maybe I'd be more interested if it weren't so aggressively forced on me all the time.
I also wish we had named it better and just called it for what it is,

Most of the time nothing useful is said, it's just "I'm for" versus "I'm against".
The most important discussion would be about who is actually making money with AI tools. It's only a few big fishes. What does this imply?

Frustration Nov 28, 2024

I wouldn't be so frustrated if there's more to talk about. But as Liena and Zea said, most topics I've seen were run under the general theme of either AI-phobia or AI-philia. On the one hand, it's exhausting to see the never-ending gloom and doom saying that AI will take over every profession under the sun. Not just among translators, this is also true in other communities I'm being part of. So imagine how unhappy I am when people brought up the same old discussion over and over again.

On the other, the marketing push to adopt AI has started to get on my nerves. I've never been so disgusted by words such as “empower” or “embrace” in my life. It's shameless. We're witnessing the 21st century version of snake oil adverts. AI is so powerful it can do anything? Give me a break. These days, I can't seem to go anywhere without someone trying to sell me their smart-something, AI-driven technology.

Well, I suppose this is my problem. I can always opt to not involving myself in such topics, which is what I'll do.

You should make a poll: Can Chat GPT/AI find translating jobs for you directly from clients' or outsourcers' websites?
So, instead coming here and looking for job posts, the ChatGPT/AI will look up at clients' or outsorcers' websites for active job posts.
Feed the ChatGPT with translations companies websites and see what will happen.

Google translate is, and it will be the best AI of all time.
Voice calls, Voice recognition on Smart TVs, Siri, Alexa, whatever. Same shit in different package. They are all AI from long time ago.

Well, this hype today if you didn't notice is for ChatGPT to take over the Google. AI is not a new thing, it's only a new name.

And the ones who are selling licenses for CAT tools, MT, and AI, and the ones who are offering you CAT tools, MT and AI on discount.
